Now that we are still at the beginning of the 4th ABLA season and reaching the end of the year, I thought it´d be the perfect time to look back and award the best 3 ABLA members of the past years, those members who in my opinion made ABLA a bit more special with their presence and really made the most of this language learning & social community from 2014.
ABLA Member of the Year 2014: Isabel
Isabel has been an active ABLA member since the very beginning and during the whole first ABLA season she became almost by accident the official German speaker of the group and one of the most helpful too. I´ll never forget when I first met her with her lovely daughter Chiara at the first ever ABLA event at Bar DeMiedo in 2014. She brought a whole box of CakePops, these delicious lollypop-like cakes she used to make. She definitely made that first ABLA even more special.
She was also the co-host of one of the craziest ABLA events that we´ve ever had, when we celebrated an ABLA pool party for her Birthday at her vila. It was such an amazing day of language exchange, BBQ, swimsuits, music and a LOT of beers... all until we got kicked out by security. Well, I admit it, I guess we got a bit wild, but I can´t tell you more, whatever happened at that vila, it will always stay at that vila!
ABLA Member of the Year 2015: Abha
This cheeky American teacher assistant who came to Ibiza to work for a year was undoubtedly the best member of the year 2015. She barely knew anybody when she came to Ibiza, let alone at the first ABLA event at El Taller, but her positive energy and warm personality made her fit into the group right away. She embodied the whole ABLA spirit so well, that I even asked her to help me co-host a few events in different occasions.
However, I remember her telling me how different it was for her living on an island. But Abha being Abha wouldn´t let things get her down, so she would put a smile on, come to our language exchange events, have a drink with us, chat with everybody, never practice her Spanish (ha!) and have a fun time meeting new people.“Do the best you can with what you got”, she used to say. I really liked that philosophy of life and every time I use it, I remember her.
ABLA Member of the Year 2016: Juan
Juan Facundo arrived in Ibiza alone without his family and sent by his job to run an important project on the island. He admitted to be a bit bored living here in Ibiza during the winter, so he put his energy into learning English. Juan started attending English lessons during the week and coming to most of ABLA intercambio events to practice with other English native speakers at the weekend, and wow... I can tell you that Juan´s English improved a LOT in just a few months.
Juan was fun & very interesting and I really enjoyed talking to him every week. But what I liked the most was seeing him going out with other ABLA members and making his time away from his family a bit more bearable.
Well, those where in my opinion the 3 ABLA members that stood out during the past 3 ABLA seasons, but I can´t obviously end this post mentioning & thanking the rest of the loyal ABLA members who have also made this community what it is. So special shout out to Cristina Gardenas, Hinterleitner Eva, Maria Guasch, Loli Moya, Manuel Grandi, Jey Indahouse, Jeanne Riordan, Jade Gandey, Lorena Gonzalez, Marius Morenus, Mina Navarro, Annika Sukup, Jean Paul, Cee Bwell and the dozens of all other members who make ABLA possible every week. Thanks to everybody.
